REFERENCE PHOTOS FOR PET PORTRAITS
*Please remember* that a good reference photo is key when commissioning your pet portrait or any other piece of art. It allows me to work from the best quality photograph to capture your pet as you know them. If you are taking a new photograph of your pet, I would suggest photographing them either indoors or in natural sunlight – but not directly in the blazing sun as the colours aren’t realistic. Please try to make sure your pet is sat still and is close enough to the camera that they fill most of the frame. All of these factors allow me to see reflection in the subject’s eyes and draw detail such as individual hairs. Please use the best camera available to you – if you are unable to capture a new photo of your pet, then I will try my best to work from what you have provided – maybe even using a few different photos for reference. In my pet portraits, my aim is to capture the personality of your animal, therefore high quality reference photographs are very important.
Below on the left you can see examples of not so good reference photos because they are blurry which means I am unable to capture the detail of your pet – however, the right side shows perfect examples of reference photos because they are clear and up close, filling most of the frame.
Below are my current prices for animal portraits – please contact me to for enquiries about other types of artworks. Drawings sent to UK mainland which will be posted in a cardboard tube via the Royal Mail ‘signed for’ service at a small extra cost. Please contact me for a quote if you’re from outside the UK as postage is likely to cost a little more.
All pet portraits are drawn using mainly Faber Castell coloured pencils and top quality cartridge paper. Sometimes I will use white pen to add in whiskers or glints in the eye and oil pastels to give a more fluffy effect to the animals fur.
